The Western Perspective

The western scientists contend that dreams depict the input of whatever goes to the subconscious of an individual. Psychologists Alfred Adler and Carl Jung did some outstanding experiments on unconscious human beings. On the other hand Freud, Stuart, Mackenzy brought to light some interesting facts that the character of a person could be evaluated through dreams. They reported that dream world is at par with the conscious world. In fact it runs parallel to real life. The good is reflected in good dreams and the evil represented in bad and evil dreams. For example a murderer will be haunted by terrible voices and at times finds himself fettered and imprisoned in a cell or is being hounded by the police. Sometimes he feels himself on gallows and witnesses awesome scenario and wakes up profusely perspired. A chronic pessimist dreams like a crying pessimist and wakes up sobbing…..

To some extent the arguments of the Orientalists are correct although a majority of the dreams have no bearing on the real world nor do they display any correlation to the physical body of its subject. There is no tenable explanation or plausible reasons behind occurrences of such dreams. Such dreams are interpreted on an abstract basis.

Freud on the other hand argued that the dreams are just another form of expression of one’s suppressed sentiments. Jung and Casey believed that different phases of spiritual and physical aspects of human life are revealed in the dreams. The dreams however are invariably an index of the mind of an individual. A sound sleeping person does not dream. On the other hand an anxious and worrisome mind stimulates the dream process. This shows that in reality a dream is a conscious act. If dream world is compared with the real life then it becomes clear that there are no restrictions in the events that normally occur in the awakened condition.

It is sometimes commonly experienced that an individual finds himself flying in his dream and watching others at far off places and interacting with a host of subjects. This phenomenon may be considered as an exception to the rule but it negates the theory of Orientalists who contend that dreams are a form of reflection of thoughts of individuals. The dream world is non elemental world.
